Benny Hinn
Benny Hinn at one of his crusades.

In the fifth estate's original broadcast of Do You Believe in Miracles in 2004, an investigation into the workings of televangelist Benny Hinn and his ministry, viewers were captivated by a mother and daughter we met in the stands at one of Hinn's crusades.

Janice Brulotte, of Fernie, British Columbia, is a life-long believer whose then 8-year-old, Grace, couldn't walk because of arthrogryposis multiplex congenital, a severe neuro muscular disorder. Hoping for a miracle for Grace, they had tried to make their way to the stage, but they were intercepted by Hinn screeners who ordered them to sit down. There would be no miracle for Grace that night. They left the arena and returned home to Fernie.

Since then, a lot has happened in the lives of the televangelist and the little girl who tried to meet him.

Senator Charles Grassley
Senator Charles Grassley is looking into Hinn's finances.

Benny Hinn is the focus of an investigation by the US Senate Finance Committee. Senator Charles Grassley, the top Republican on the committee, told the fifth estate: "We've had a lot of anecdotal information come to us. Enough to raise questions about whether or not the tax laws are being complied with."

Senator Grassley sent Pastor Benny a letter, requesting data about finances that Hinn has previously refused to make public. Grassley wants to know about Benny Hinn's salary and bonuses, and about his lavish travel expenses. The fundamental question: does Benny Hinn properly spend the money he receives tax-free because it's for religious purposes.

If Benny Hinn doesn't voluntarily comply, Senator Grassley says he will force him to with a subpoena, providing data he could then give to the Internal Revenue Service, as was the case when Grassley investigated the company found to have committed the biggest corporate fraud in U.S. history—Enron.

Grace
Today Grace is a budding artist and pianist.

Whatever is happening in Benny Hinn's life has not shattered the faith of Janice Brulotte. "We don't give up faith", she told the fifth estate, "just because men fail us." Eleven-year-old Grace has kept her faith and is ready to take on the world. In July, 2007, Grace traveled to a conference in Texas to meet with other children who also have AMC. (see photos of Grace's trip)

She has also received a digital recorder from a provincial agency set up to help disabled children use technology and she'll be using it to cover the BC Winter Games. Her reports will be posted on the internet. Grace is also studying piano and voice, and is a budding artist (see more of Grace's artwork here) Even without the help of Benny Hinn, the story of Grace Brulotte is reason enough to believe in miracles.
