About the Airbus Affair
For more than a decade, the fifth estate has investigated rumours and allegations surrounding the 1988 sale of 34 Airbus A-320 jets to Air Canada and the mysterious dealmaker, Karlheinz Schreiber. The following stories are a result of the fifth estate’s investigations:
1995: Sealed in Silence was the first investigation of the Airbus deal, including Schreiber’s role in it, secret bank accounts and Schreiber’s influential Canadian friends who benefited from the billion dollar deal.
1995: The Insider in which it is revealed that Brian Mulroney is one of the subjects of an RCMP Airbus investigation. The fifth estate talks to Schreiber accountant, Giorgio Pelossi, who reveals details about codenamed bank accounts for Frank Moores and Brian Mulroney.
1999: The Mysterious Dealmaker, in which the fifth estate obtained bank documents that showed former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney had received a cash payment from Schreiber.
2001: Choppers, Plots, and Cold Hard Cash reported that the “Dump Joe Clark” movement which would lead to Brian Mulroney being installed as leader of the PC Party, was funded, in part, by German business tycoon Walter Wolf and Karlheinz Schreiber.
2006: Money, Truth and Spin. For the first time, Schreiber sits down in front of the TV cameras to answer questions about his secretive past and about his relationship with Brian Mulroney and cash payments of $300,000.
2007: Brian Mulroney: The Unauthorized Chapter. The former PM’s biography was the publishing event of the year, but nowhere would a reader find the name of Karlheinz Schreiber. Schreiber again publicly reveals more detail about cash payments for the former prime minister.
2008: The Chess Master. A Parliamentary Committee is expected to unlock the mysteries of the Airbus scandal. A breathless public awaits the testimony. But, instead of revelation, the fifth estate revealed that sworn testimony contained manipulation and lies.
2009: The Elephant in the Room. A long-anticipated commission of public inquiry, headed by Justice Jeffrey Oliphant, begins hearings. But, will questions that go to the heart of the matter, questions about the Airbus deal, ever be asked or answered? |
