June 24, 1942
Bertram Earl Jones is born in Montreal.
1963
Earl Jones begins to work at Montreal Trust. Over 16 years, he works in 8 to 10 different positions, including investment management, estates and trust administration, will planning and manager of the mortgage department.
1966
Jones marries his high school sweetheart Maxine Heayberd.
Late 1970s
Jones leaves Montreal Trust to start his own business. He sets up a table and a chair in the corner of his friends’ office in downtown Montreal. Soon after, he begins holding courses on taking care of finances in church basements and community centers.
1980
Earl Jones joins the Royal Montreal Golf Club, one of the most exclusive golf clubs in North America.
1984
Earl Jones launches Earl Jones Consultant & Administration Corporation, an administrative and financial advising company.
1986/87
Jones begins to make withdrawls from his bank account, into which he has deposited his clients money, for himself and his family.
1988
Earl Jones moves his office from Montreal to the West Island.
2005-2006
Jones sets up nine mortgages valued at nearly $2 million. He convinces many of his clients to re-mortgage their homes.
March 2008
One of Jones clients requires a large amount of money to be transferred, the client receives the sum of $500,000.
Summer 2008
Earl Jones ‘in trust’ account at the Royal Bank is switched to a commercial account. However Jones continues to print ‘in trust’ on the cheques he is using with clients.
End of 2008
Jones is in need of cash. He cashes in his RRSPs and life insurance.
June 2009
Checks start bouncing and clients phone calls and complaints pile up. Friends and clients of Jones can’t get a hold of him by phone.
First week of July
Two clients file papers against Earl Jones with their lawyers, demanding he pay them out.
July 7, 2009
Jones calls his brother Bevan and Frankie and leaves a message saying that he is in trouble and hopes that he could have the support of the family.
July 10, 2009
Company assets are seized by authorities. Jones is gone and bank account is empty.
July 27, 2009
Jones, now 67, turns himself into police. He stole an estimated $50 million from 158 clients.
January 15, 2010
Earl Jones pleads guilty to two counts of fraud totalling roughly $50 million.
