Video Interview: Marty McSorley
Marty McSorley made his NHL debut during the 1983-1984 season with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but soon joined Wayne Gretzky and Edmonton Oilers where he gained a reputation as Gretzky’s protector. When "Number 99" was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in August 1988, McSorley was part of the trade. He had his most productive seasons while in L.A., averaging well over 30 points per season during his first five years with the Kings. However, the Hamilton, Ontario native’s NHL career ended after a notorious incident. In 2000, while playing for the Boston Bruins, McSorley slashed former Vancouver Canucks enforcer Donald Brashear across the head in the closing seconds of a game. McSorley was suspended by the National Hockey League for 18 months and fined $72,000. The assault also led to a criminal conviction and 18 months of probation.
