Don Cherry
Just as with the subject of fighting in hockey, there is no national consensus on Don Cherry. But, love him or hate him, Canada's best-known hockey commentator, knows the game. The Kingston, Ontario native played professional hockey for 21 years, most of them in the minors where he had a reputation as a fighter. In 1955, he played one game for the Boston Bruins during a playoff series. After retiring as a player from hockey, Don Cherry returned as head coach for the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League for three seasons and then became the head coach of the Boston Bruins. In 1976, Cherry won the Jack Adams award for best coach in the NHL. Cherry would lead his Bruins to two consecutive Stanley Cup finals in 1977 and 1978 but lose to the Montreal Canadiens. In 1980, he was hired as a hockey analyst and a legend was born. In 2004, he finished seventh on a list of the ten Greatest Canadians.
