Yohji Yamamoto, the designer known for his exquisitely cut all-black collections, opened and closed his fall show with a shot of colour. At first it appeared that he was moving into new territory but after a brief interlude, his cherished black was back in full force.

Yohji Yamamoto continues to show his signature ready-to-wear collections during Haute Couture – a full two months ahead of schedule. This season, this decision made perfect sense as Fall’s couture was all about the body and Yamamoto’s clothing was an exercise in finding new ways to display it.

In a collection that experimented with proportion and played with gender Yohji Yamamoto presented an interesting dichotomy between toughness and sweetness for fall 2002. From top to toe Yamamoto's flirtation with sportswear rendered his thought provoking tailoring ever more intriguing. His complex originality always lends an intellectual accent to the fashion beat but this season Yohji lightened up with a touch of unexpected whimsy.
