Rochas - Fall/Winter 2006
While blackened chimney sweeps may not evoke the most fashionable of images, under Olivier Theyskens' poetic imaginings, the house of Rochas presented a moody, minimalist affair that struck the perfect balance between the sombre and the ethereal. With hushed reverence, romantic, moody offerings such as lean trousers, sober jackets, and enchanting gowns were presented, never once veering into costume.

With a gentle persistence, Olivier Theyskens’ progress at the French fashion house of Rochas is making jaws drop while simultaneously guiding the
direction of fashion. Inspired by the impressionistic strokes of Monet’s paintings at Giverny, Theyskens put the fashion crowd under his spell with this collection and clearly cemented his creative output as the New Minimalism in fashion.

The hallmark of a good designer is one who can try his hand at a wide range of silhouettes and inspirations without losing his signature. Two years after Olivier Theyskens gave up his own label to re-energize the house of Rochas, he is mastering ladylike elegance with an indefinable hint of his gothic sensibility.

In a structured, sophisticated collection, Theyskens explored concepts of womanhood – exposing the sculpted female form, cocooning his garments in fragile lace, and embellishing pieces with oval symbols of fertility. Though a brave new perspective on haute femininity, Theyskens’ woman has always had a dark edge that is difficult to reconcile with the mainstream.
