One of the hallmarks of the ongoing collaboration between Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez is the way they mix their always intriguing references to create cohesive collections. This season’s references weren’t made clear before the show, but with hair and makeup working in separate decades it was clear that another interesting mix was being planned.

Design duo Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez adhered closely to a modern silhouette of roomy mid-calf length skirts and slim tapered pants this
season. And while details like gentle puff sleeves and cinched waists are right on target with current trends, Proenza Schouler’s intricate embroidery
and ornamentation harken back to the old couturiers and the distinctive beauty of something that can only be created by the hand.

Drawing inspiration from the works of 20th-century artists like Joseph Beuys and Alexander Calder, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez do not hesitate to attach an intellectual element to their designs. This season, the design team melds the future with an androgynous appeal, but does not disregard the skin-tight corsetry that has become a signature of each and every Proenza Schouler collection.

Lazaro Hernandez and his partner Jack McCollough went for ‘something soft and chic’ this season. Evolving their sculpted camisoles and slender skirts into easier, softer shapes with a tropical influence.

There was no sign of a sophomore slump this season, backstage in the cavernous Javits Center in Lower Manhattan. Their combination of uptown tailoring and funky separates continues to draw in the fashion A-list. Whatever their secret, this could be just the beginning. The rumour circulating at this show was that they were the new anonymous design team behind the massive Italian label MaxMara.

The cinderella story at New York Fashion Week this season involved a hot new label with a tricky name: Proenza Schouler. The design team of Lazaro Hernandez and Jack Mccullough was attracting industry attention while they were still classmates at design school. Now, thanks to a chance encounter with the Vogue Magazine editor Anna Wintour, they’re becoming major players in the big leagues of fashion.
