Elie Saab Haute Couture - Spring/Summer 2007

It has been well documented that Elie Saab is a Lebanese designer, but never before has this been as significant as it is this season. During last summer’s conflict with Israel, his Beirut-based atelier struggled to deliver couture gowns for weddings and gala receptions. This spring, he has taken his haute couture inspiration from the colours of dawn in Beirut, and given everything a dewy shimmer.

Elie Saab - Spring/Summer 2007

Elie Saab started this collection just like so many others, inspired by the seventies, disco, and the French pop star sisters Dalida and Sylvie Vartan. Then, in the heat of last summer, a military conflict erupted between Israel and Lebanon, and Saab’s hometown of Beirut was besieged by aerial bombings. Full of national pride and determined to make a statement about hope and peace, Saab showed all fifty-five exits in his spring collection in gold, as an homage to the sun that shines over Beirut.

Despite a reputation as the king of sexy couture, Elie Saab is still considered the new kid on the haute couture block. For his fall collection Saab focused on sensuality, with dresses being key - from cocktail outfits with plunging necklines and sexy backs to showstopping red carpet gowns adorned with Valentino-esque ruffles and bows.

Elie Saab Haute Couture - Spring/Summer 2003

This is Lebanese designer Elie Saab's seventh Haute Couture season in Paris though he is now best known as the designer of Hollywood sex-siren Halle Berry's sculpted Oscar dresses. Ultra glam, red carpet gowns sashayed down the catwalk. This was a predominately evening collection that glittered with beads and sequins, displaying the showmanship of Haute Couture in all its glory. The showmanship and ritual of society dressing and bridal fashion in Beirut paved the way for Elie Saab's red carpet success.
