YVES SAINT LAURENT (1936-2008)
Yves Saint Laurent was more than just a fashion designer: he changed the way we think about clothes. He gave women peacoats, trench coats, pantsuits and tuxedos. He invented ready-to-wear, which dominates the fashion industry today. And he was the first to take inspiration from the arts, ethnic cultures, and the streets of Paris.
Saint Laurent retired in 2002, with a grand retrospective of his work, and has stayed out of the spotlight since then. Fashion File attended that night and mourned the loss of a fashion original. Today, we do it again.
Yves Saint Laurent died last night of a brain tumour at the age of 71. To say it's the end of an era, doesn't seem quite enough.
