How Plan Nord mining projects will affect Crees
On May 9th Quebec Premier Jean Charest officially announced his Plan Nord. The plan includes new mines, new electricity projects, forestry, tourism and other development north of the 49th parallel. The Plan Nord promises 80 billion dollars in economic benefits over the next 25 years. In an effort to reach out to the Aboriginal people and Inuit in the north, the government also promised more housing and a fair share of the profits and jobs from the new development projects. One of the Crees present at the official launch of the Plan Nord was Jack Blacksmith, president of CreeCo and the Cree Mineral Exploration Board. Roderick Rabbitskin spoke with him afterward to hear his perspective on the Plan Nord.
