Riding profile

riding map

The riding is a mix of urban parts of the city of Gatineau, across the river from Ottawa, and the small towns and lushly forested areas stretching north from there into the Gatineau Hills and beyond. Communities include Cantley, Chelsea, Kazabazua, La Pêche, Lac-Sainte-Marie, Maniwaki, Messines, Sainte-Thérèse-de-la-Gatineau and Val-des-Monts.

The riding was created in 1930 and has undergone various tweaks over the years. In the 2011 boundary revisions, it lost some of its southern extremity to the neighbouring ridings of Chapleau and Hull, but picked up an area that was part of Papineau.

Political history

Gatineau has been loyally Liberal since 1962. It was the seat of Robert Bourassa-era cabinet minister Michel Gratton (revenue, tourism, electoral reform).
