Incumbent Liberal Mario Sergio held this seat in 2011, beating Tom Rakocevic of the NDP.
Sergio beat New Democrat Antoni Shelton by 6,482 votes in the 2007 election.
Sergio, who represented Yorkview from 1995 to 1999, has represented the York West riding since its creation ahead of the 1999 election. Sergio beat Progressive Conservative Chris Collier by more than 11,000 votes that year. He won by a similar margin in 2003, defeating New Democrat Garth Bobb.
In 1990, Giorgio Mammoliti, now a Toronto councillor, claimed the old riding of Yorkview for the NDP by defeating Liberal Claudio Polsinelli. Mammoliti lost to Sergio in 1995.
Voters in the former riding of Downsview elected Liberal Laureano Leone in 1987. In 1990, New Democrat Anthony Perruzza won Downsview, only to be beaten by Liberal Annamarie Castrilli in 1995.
