Riding profile

riding map

This riding north of Toronto contains the towns of Newmarket and Aurora.

Its borders are Bloomington Road in the south, Newmarket town limits in the north, Bathurst Street in the west and Highway 404 in the east.

The riding was created in 2007 from 62 per cent of York North and 37 per cent of Vaughan-King-Aurora.

Population: 133,181 (2011 census, up 9.2% since 2006)

Political history

PC Frank Klees secured a 1,355-vote victory over Liberal Christina Bisanz in 2007. Klees also triumphed over Liberal Helena Jaczek by 2,143 votes in the old Oak Ridges riding in the 2003 election.

But Klees will not be running in 2014, leaving the riding open for political change.

The former York North riding was a conservative stronghold from 1945 on, except for a brief Liberal period in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Liberal Charles Beer won the riding in 1987 and was re-elected in 1990. Beer lost to Klees in 1995; Klees was re-elected in the new riding of Oak Ridges in 1999.

Tory Al Palladini won in Vaughan-King-Aurora in 1999, after first being elected an MPP for York Centre in 1995. The former car salesman and 1994's Canadian World Auto Marketer of the Year, Palladini held transportation, economic development, trade and tourism portfolios under Mike Harris. He left politics in February 2001 and, a month later, died after suffering a heart attack while golfing in Mexico.

The Liberals took over the riding in the byelection following Palladini's resignation, as Greg Sorbara beat Conservative Joyce Frustaglio with 61 per cent of the vote. Sorbara won a commanding victory in 2003, crushing PC Carmine Iacono by more than 15,000 votes.
