Riding profile

riding map

This large, primarily rural riding extends some 176 kilometres along the eastern shore of Lake Huron, from south of Grand Bend to north of Port Elgin and Southampton.

The Bruce nuclear power plant in Port Elgin also serves as an important economic force in the riding.

In the redistribution of 1999, this new riding took in more than half of the former Bruce riding and all of the former Huron riding.

Population: 104,842 (2011 census; an increase of 0.5% since 2006)

Political history

Progressive Conservative Lisa Thompson beat Liberal incumbent Carol Mitchell in 2011, preventing Mitchell from winning a third time.

Mitchell beat PC candidate Rob Morley by 6,863 votes in the 2007 election. She took the seat from PC Helen Johns in the 2003 election.

In the old riding of Huron, Tory Charles MacNaughton sat from 1958 until his retirement in 1973. Liberal Jack Riddell was elected in 1973 and held the seat through to 1990.

Liberal Murray Elston won in Huron-Bruce in 1981 and 1985 and in the riding of Bruce in 1987 and 1990. He stepped down prior to the 1995 election, which was won by Tory Barb Fisher.

Fisher lost her seat when Mike Harris's government reduced the number of provincial ridings in 1996 and she lost the contest to run in this riding. Helen Johns won the party nomination and the Huron-Bruce election in 1999.
