Riding profile

election

This riding in the "Golden Horseshoe" in southern Ontario is a mix of urban and rural communities, including Ancaster, Dundas and Flamborough, part of the amalgamated city of Hamilton.

It stretches from Milburough town line in the north to Sawmill Road in the south. Garner Road, the transmission lines and Highway 403 comprise the eastern boundary, while Gore Road marks the western edge.

The riding was created in 2007 by combining 87 per cent of Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Aldershot and 19 per cent of Hamilton West.

Population: 116,357 (2011 census; an increase of 4% since 2006)

Political history

Liberal Ted McMeekin won the riding in 2011 by a 4,526-vote margin over Progressive Conservative Donna Skelly. PC Chris Corrigan had lost to McKeekin in 2007. McMeekin first won the riding in a 2000 byelection and was re-elected in 2003.

In the riding of Hamilton West, Liberal Stuart Smith won in 1975, 1977 and 1981. Smith also served as Ontario Liberal leader from 1976 to 1982. The NDP held the riding from 1982 through to 1995, when they lost to the Tories. David Christopherson reclaimed the redistributed riding for the New Democrats in 1999.

Christopherson chose not to run in the 2003 election, instead embarking on an ultimately unsuccessful run for mayor of Hamilton.

Liberal Judy Marsales captured the seat in a tight race in 2003, beating New Democrat Roy Adams by 2,132 votes.
