The tornado was created when a cold front slammed into a week-long heatwave hanging over the city just as Edmontonians began preparing for the August long weekend. Within one hour 27 people had been killed, more than 300 others injured, at least 300 homes destroyed and over $300 million in property damaged, leaving the day known forever in Edmonton as Black Friday.
