Velo Village and Gulf Island Biking

Biking the Gulf Islands is a great way to see the sights, save money, and get in touch with the place. This weekend's Velo Village on Salt Spring Island is a multi-day conference and celebration of bikes.

They aim to get city cyclists in connected with their country cousins, and improve cycling on the islands. There's even a bike-only ferry and a special Velo Village brew from Salt Spring Island Ales.

Despite the hills (of which there are many), Gulf Islands biking is extremely rewarding. One of my favourite rides is out to East Point on Saturna Island. Spectacular views of the ocean and ancient arbutus trees greet you on Tumbo Channel Road, with a great new museum at the end of your journey. And the pedal out the lighthouse on Mayne Island is sweet indeed, especially when you descend Georgina Point Road into Miner's Bay.

Sophie Low-Beer and her young family often bike to the Gulf Islands. Galiano and Salt Spring  are particular favourites.

If you plan to go, note that you don't have to bike all the way to the ferry. You can take transit or a vehicle to the terminal with your bike.
