Anatomy of a Bikeway

What does it take to turn a regular street into a bikeway, or greenway? We hear alot about separated bike lanes, but bikeways (where cyclists share local streets with motorized vehicles and pedestrians) make up most Vancouver's 400 km+ bike network.

There's a new bikeway in the works on Dumfries Street, running from 37th Ave down to 14th Ave. It will connect a couple of major existing bikeways. Jerry Dobrovolny is the Director of Transportation for the City of Vancouver. He explained the process of creating a bikeway, and the physical elements that go into it. Work is underway now and will be gradually completed over the next six months.
