Profile: Diom Roméo Saganash

Diom Roméo Saganash has spent the past twenty years of his life defending the rights of the James Bay Cree. In the spring of 2011, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for the Quebec riding of Abitibi - Baie James - Nunavik - Eeyou

In his position as NDP critic for natural resources, Roméo Saganash continues the work he started with The Grand Council of the Crees years ago. His work has been recognized by the United Nations. He was a key player in the creation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Saganash is a Cree from Waswanipi. He was born in 1962 and at a young age was taken away from his parents to be educated in a residential school in La Tuque, Quebec. In 1989, he became the first Cree in Quebec to receive a law degree. From 1990 -1993, he served as The Vice-Grand Chief to The Grand Council of the Crees of James Bay, where he also worked as Director for over ten years.

In 2003, Roméo Saganash was awarded a prize from the l'Université du Québec à Montréal for the role he played in negotiating the historic La Paix des Braves, which was signed in 2002 by the Quebec government and The Grand Council of the Crees.

In September 2011, he announced he would run for the leadership of the federal New Democratic Party.
