Lucinda Phillips is Chief of the Lil'wat First Nation near Whistler, B.C. For years, she and her community faced encroachment of their traditional territories from all sides... with little to no consultation or compensation.

But those days are nearly over. Her people's traditional territory was recognized on an international stage for the first time at the 2010 Olympics. Since then, her band has been exerting its rights and making some lucrative deals.

"Yes, it is possible. It is possible for parties that have significant differences to bridge those differences and to come together. And what people are hopeful about is that there's a very different relationship that we can build together. There's a partnership, and what will happen in the future will be done together and jointly." she says.
