This Year's Overall Winner: Robert Postma, Whitehorse, YK Click for description.
Announcing this year's winners!
"We've framed the problem the wrong way. There is no environment 'out there' that we interact with, we ARE the environment. When we look at air, water, soil, energy, those are the very things that are in us from our surroundings. What we do to the environment, we do directly to ourselves." - Dr. David Suzuki
The Nature of Things and Planet in Focus present the 2009-10 winners of the 6th annual Nature in Focus environmental photography competition.
"This contest has legs. Every year, it attracts more and more entries and the quality of the material just gets better and better," says Tom Cruickshank, editor of Harrowsmith Country Life Magazine and one of our judges. "There is so much enthusiasm among the entrants: great subjects and great technique. It makes the judge's job quite daunting." This year digital entries were also accepted to the competition, and again a record number of entries were received, this time shattering all previous numbers with over 4,000 total entries.
Overall, the judging panel was impressed with not only the beauty of the images but also the fact that each image tells a specific story that fits within a larger planetary context. "I was overwhelmed by the level of photography and the diversity of subjects," enthused guest judge and nature photographer Ron Erwin.
This year's grand prize winner is Robert Postma (see above), who has won a green-inspired vacation for two courtesy of Tourism Victoria, as well as a Nikon CoolPix P90 digital camera. His breathtaking photograph of the aurora borealis was taken with the aid of a tripod and a shutter speed set to 25 seconds. The other competition winners also received digital cameras from Nikon Canada and free subscriptions to Harrowsmith Country Life magazine.
Thank you to our sponsors, and of course, to all of you who participated and contributed towards making this year's competition another success!
