What exactly does 'responsible ownership' mean for cat lovers? Here's are some tips collected from cat protection agencies.

  • Identify your cat. Although tags work, permanent ID like a microchip are better in case your cat is lost or picked up and is not wearing a tag.
  • Spay or neuter cat. Along with prevented more unwanted pets there are plenty of health benefits such as: reduced incidence of reproductive system diseases, elimination of female heat cycles and male spraying, less efforts (by the cat) to get outdoors and a more sociable and affectionate cat.
  • Socialize your cat. Get them used to be touched and handled. This will reduce fearful and aggressive behaviours towards people.
  • Remove household hazards. Check to make sure your household plants are not toxic. Move breakable objects to an out of reach location. Keep cleaners, medications - and chocolate - in areas that are not accessible. Don't leave string, yarn or elastic bands lying around. And tie up cords from blinds to prevent your cat from strangling itself.
  • Take your cat for an annual veterinary exam to monitor your cats health and administer proper vaccinations.
  • Keep your cat indoors. Indoor cats live longer, healthier and safer lives. Average life span is increased by ten years.
  • If you must send your cat outdoors, only do so during the day. A cats hunting instinct is strongest in the dark. And raise the alarm by attaching a bell or using a sonic collar.
