I quoted the filmmaker on 'The Ethical Nag' this week in light of the German drugmaker Boehringer's announcement of clinical trial results on its new 'desire drug' for women. Media response to the trials has been giddy - I can already imagine the snickering if and when this drug is approved. Goehringer stands to lose patent protection on two of its blockbuster drugs next year, so the company is anticipating a catastrophic drop in sales revenue UNLESS they can come up with a drug like this 'pink viagra'. Next comes the 'disease-mongering' phase of drug marketing - convincing women that they now have a medical disorder that must be 'cured'. One does wonder, however, how happy men will be knowing that their partner has to take a pill in order to want to have sex with him. Education about sex is the key. i was shocked when I saw the bit about the young women talking about their sex ed instructor - 80 yrs old saying that abstinence is the way and that once you are married you don't need to use contraception! Wow - this is 2009. There is good sex ed info that my 18 year-old daughter and I watch on the Kara_Sutra site. I am too embarrassed to answer some of my daughter's questions and the host is a young women who is friendly and funny but even so, sometimes I still feel embarrassed watching with my daughter. The upside is that I've checked out some of the information and it is accurate. Anyway, thank you for showing this doc. We watched it together and learned a lot - even at 49 yrs. old. |
