Web Warriors

November 20, 2008 2:14 PM

The internet is touted as one of the most important inventions in the history of modern man, and like the discovery of the atom, its ability to benefit mankind is matched only by its potential to unleash massive destruction.

Web Warriors is a one-hour documentary that offers an unprecedented glimpse into the world's newest and most vulnerable frontier: cyberspace. We enter the world of hackers like Mafia Boy - a 15 year old high school student who rose to infamy in 2000 by causing millions of dollars in damage after single-handedly shutting down internet giants - including Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, Dell, eTrade, and CNN.

Tell us what you thought of this film.

Excellent documentary keep up the good work.
What I found amazing is that a PC running Windows is exposed to about 500,000 viruses, worms and other pests. It is almost imposable not to be infected with a legend of nasties in the coarse of a day on the net.

We have been running only Linux for years, never had a virus, or worm; but then there is only about 64 viruses for that Operating system.

Why would anyone use windows for anything more critical than than playing solitaire? It is being used by the Military, Banks, energy suppliers, Canada government. Some of these are critical uses, at least I think so.

The Storm virus which has infected how many million Windows PCs, no one knows what it's purpose is. Just imagine if these, how many million netbots, starts a DoS attach on the Military or issues a simple command on each infected computer "fdisk " the file contains the instruction to delete everything on all hard disks. What would happen If you bank account records were delete or you were deleted from citizen and immigration?

It is no wonder that countries around the world are switching to more secure operating systems.

I couldn't agree more with Mr Danton.

Faced with these facts, it seems a gross dereliction of duty for those responsible for critical infrastructure to continue to use Windows.

They'll no longer be able to claim ignorance of the problem. The genie is out of the bottle now.
But they'll persist in their delusion that Microsoft is the best thing since sliced bread.

As we saw, every humble Word document is subject to information theft, aka espionage if the data is sensitive. This doesn't include the vast array of other applications or the host of other kinds of data being accessed and stolen.

In the seventies we were greatly concerned about the "Brain Drain". Perhaps we should now turn our attention to the "Data Drain".

Nothing is perfect but, using a different operating system - Apple, Linux, BSD, Unix - is one way to dramatically reduce the size of the problem.

What really disturbs me though is the possibility that the Storm worm is controlled by a foreign power, such as Russia or China, who are biding their time. Organized crime would be more interested in using it to make a profit. But they're not. In my opinion, it's controlled by a country. And that makes us a target.
