February 8, 2008 2:25 PM

How many times have you thought: "I just want to be happy"?

Since the time of Aristotle humans have been trying to find the key to happiness, and how we can be happier. More than 35,000 books have been published on the topic, and it's been the subject of numerous TV shows, movies and motivational seminars. Now the pursuit of happiness has become the subject of serious scientific study, and the results show there are some simple things we can all do to make ourselves even happier.

We'll tell you what happiness is (and what it isn't), help you find out how happy you are, and give you practical tips on how you can increase your happiness.

Tell us what you thought about this film. Are you happy? Do you want to be happier?

While money can make one feel a little bit satisfied it does not buy lasting happiness.

To me even if I have the whole world I still cannot be happy, but I have learned and experinced that Spirituality is the key to lasting happiness-A feeling of submission, willingless and obedience to God's commands.

I enjoyed this documentary so much that I feel inspired to become a Happiness Pychologist myself. I especially enjoyed the section on happiness at work - I fullheartedly agree that the people need more investment in their wellbeing and therefore productivity will also increase - make it a worthwhile place not just a workplace. Thank you so very much for broadcasting this and please have more in the future.

I have pursued inner happyness my entire life through looking outside myself over there somewhere. At 60+ I am finding acceptance of self in the universe. I now experience many moments of bliss and graditude for our world and have tremendous faith that world peace will be a reality in my life time. It seems that where ever I look I see the emphasis is on joy, contentment, acceptance, forgivemess and peace. These are not new values, and yet are being accepted as new and goal worthy.

I really enjoyed this doc on happiness.
It made me think about my life and what I could do to bring more meaning and happiness to my life experience. I experience happiness, but would like to feel happier and a stronger sense of meaning in life. I am challenged with depression, so any insights on how to raise my happiness quotient is wonderful.
Thanks for the great program.

I believe that Happiness is mind over matter. If you think positive thoughts then you will attract positive things. If you are negative then you will have negativity in your life all the time. Like they say "misery loves company."
When a person is happy, then negative life events (we all have them regardless of your state of mind)will be easier to overcome or deal with. Chances are the postive person will have the better supports in their lives to overcome them.

Although money cannot buy you happiness it does however, provide comfort and stability. Spirituality is not all about God,and the willingness to be submissive. It is about how you handle what life ( ie... god) throws at you and if you are willing to have it in you life.

I find it hard to be happy with the way humans conduct ourselves. People starve, kill and torture each other and animals, polute and capitlistic greed runs the world. Happiness is for the niave and ignorant. If I was an intelligent alien being, I would seriously consider sabotaging any attempt of letting the humans, polute and destroy other worlds as we have done with earth.

Now I feel happier that I got this off my chest!

I firmly believe that happiness starts in your tiny, little cells. The energy that you get from your cells allows you to appreciate life and gives you tons of opportunities to transfert it to others. These daily moments are magical.

Although humans are investing sizable effort in generating happiness for themselves and for those they care about a more desirable goal would be purusing serenity instead of elation which tends to rebound with de-elation or sorrow or grief. The goal of sustained elation is impractical and not to be aimed for. Sustained serenity would be highly desirable and the best means to achieve it would be a cognitive shift through learning to cherish and enjoy the state of affairs one finds oneself in even if that happens to be a concentration camp or a similar horrendous set of circumstances. The acontrollia model of depression leads to the inevitable conclusion that changing the mind set by learning to feel serene under all circumstances compatible with living is the most certain way of achieving sustained serenity. Having said that, it requires a substantial control over the subconscious to succeed in this almost impossible to achieve state of mind. But the rewards are sufficiently important that a very serious consideration be given to this.

I think happiness starts with oneself and the realization that common ideals of wealth and consumption DOES NOT mean happiness. It's the people around you and life experiences that will inevitable make your life a happier experience. Just remember if you were to pass on tomorrow how would you like people to remember you? John had a nice car and big house or Johnny smiled alot and was friendly to everyone???

I'm surprised that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi wasn't included as one of the positive psychology experts. His book "Flow" changed my life.

It is impossible to genuinely understand happiness if you have never experienced the depths of depression. There are qualities of mankind that can only be revealed when pushed to the brink of life and death.
