Why We Fight

March 20, 2007 2:18 PM

Just why does America fight? Acclaimed filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, (The Trials of Henry Kissinger) creates a sense of urgency and moves beyond the headlines to uncover the deeper answers behind the American war machine in WHY WE FIGHT - Winner of the Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2005.

Inspired by Dwight Eisenhower's legendary farewell speech, filmmaker Jarecki surveys the scorched landscape of a half-century's military adventures, asking how, and revealing why he believes that the nation of, by, and for the people has become the savings-and-loan of a system whose survival depends on a state of constant war.

Tell us what you think about this film.

FYI CBC,

There's a lot of truth behind why we fight. But there's a lot more than that; and it's tied into the current era of devolution and the foundation of devolution is "consumerism" which is why even college students are in debt over their heads before they even graduate. Devolution is the heart beat of America that uses spending money we "don't" have nor can we afford; In order to portray a false persona of what freedom really means.

In reality; the current status quo of the same ole same ole is nothing more than "fascist capitalism" at the expense of tens of millions being killed around the world each and every decade. The markets are going to crash in a very big way and very soon.

Regards CBC.

Thank you. Why We Fight brought all of the lead ups, lies, connections and context for the US's Iraqi invasion home to me. The last 6 years and even the last century now makes a lot more sense to me.

Here here to sundance and thank you jesus for putting this on the air!!

This was gutwrenching , heartwrenching and soulshaking .

Absolutely outrageaous that i am speechless at where to begin. I may be young and idealistic but my parents are still idealistic whilst facing retirement tho much less politically involved they are no less disuaded please air this again!

As soon as it finished i came to my computer to share this information as quickly as possible. A call to action if indeed there ever was one true. I was crying at the atrocity, the disillusionment, this is why the voting public, especially the young, tho perhaps the most astutely, are so disillusioned and ignored. Perhaps they are unknowingly responding to an element of intuition to be premptively be disillusioned. They must "know" that their government in no way could care any less or any more about opinion polls or the trust that politicians are supposed to be stewarding for the public.

Is this all there is to humanity and the democratic appeal? A farce to human autonomy and free will?

Further more, the feedback i have gotten thus far from an american, in fact, after sharing my outrage, to my suprise, matched my own outrage. Maybe i am right to be writing and applauding this docu-drama after all and to genuinely wish to have 'world peace' and make a difference in the lives of others.

My rambling support aside, 'Id like to thank you for bearing with me to the end of call of support as i have just stated.

Thank you for the time, and opportunity.

A story about why "we" (America not Canada) fight does not once mention the fact that the chief architects of the war were the very pro-Israeli neocons (Richard Perle, Bill Kristol, Paul Wolfowitz) you interview for this piece.

How is it that a Canadian media institution gives a platform to the very people who have been discredited beyond redemption in the U.S. itself to flesh out why America goes to war? These people haven't got a single shred of credibility left, but they are prominently quoted by a taxpayer subsidized media outlet in Canada. C'mon guys, get in the game or get out of it.

The CBC has picked another documentary that is unflattering to the USA. When are you and the left wing knuckleheads that watch your biased news programs going to come to grips with the jealousy that is harboured for the USA .

If you are going to show the bodies of the innocent alleged victims of the bombing campaign then show the deliberate atrocities from the Taliban and Elquida . Before you feel justified in criticising our American cousins, why not clean up our house and do a program on the real Chretien and Trudeau and not the "save" Canada version that you have been feeding us for years. Maybe your
viewer count would increase.

Hi all,

Great documentary!

I have a question for reporters. Can you find the clip of General Tommy Franks on the night of the begining of Operation Iraqi Freedom?

In that clip he clearly states that the US is going into Iraq and will likely be there for a decade.

This was downplayed in the following days by Pentagon sources as perhaps 5 years. But this US military policy was never mentioned again by major media.

Why did General Franks say this? What did he know then about US policy that was being hidden from the American people by the Bush administration?

Personally, I think the reason is to secure control over the 4th largest oil reserve in case its needed in a much bigger conflict.

But that would require a calculable yet acceptable rate of loss of soldiers. This the Pentagon will not want discussed in American media.

If the neo con 'world control' policy is to be taken seriously, much bigger and serious conflicts will be sought.

We are now inches away from some provocation to launch a conflict with Iran.

Another question:

Where is this motto written?

"Our business is war and business is good."

There's your problem. LOL!

Charlie Rose drew interesting new ideas from Dr Kissinger this week? I was mildly shocked to see a neo con begin to 'get it' Good one Charlie!

The war in Vietnam was lost by Americans reading about it in Time and Life magazines and on the major networks. Solution? Buy them out.

Cheers.

This show was very thought provoking, and only confirms what I thought all along, the whole thing was orchestrated, for the benefit of very few.

I hope our own Prime Minister saw the show, if he has a back bone, he will start with the immediate withdrawal of our troops. Canada is wasting the lives of it's military men and women, it's money, for what, so that Bush and his think tanks could have their selfish war.

As a senior I felt that AT LAST I CONNECTED THE DOTS. I cannot tell you how long its been that I knew I was out of the loop and thought others had a handle on just what was going on with world affairs. I don't even think your average MP in Canada understands what this documentary tells us.

Now I get it. And, it's as big a problem as I feared it might be.

What are we going to do to reign in our government's stories about supporting our troops and spending our dollars on supporting the military-industrial complex? Please ask your MP and all candidates running in our next federal election.

While watching the doc I learned that we are being taken to the cleaners by these war mongers and, also, the global span of US interests. Really, 14 permanent armed forces bases are being erected just in Iraq! And, the money comes from duped US citizens who live in the hateful right-left dichotomy that they hate and don't know how to get rid of. And, to think there even was no proper federal US response to Katrina!

The industrial-military complex is responsible for this and for having developed so many chemical and military products that has degraded our life, planet and total environment. And don't think that our life has not been degraded since the dropping of the bomb on Japan. We are paying a huge political price for that act.

This documentary explains why our economy is the way it is and why our schools of education and hospitals are underfunded and why the poor and homeless are not cared for. In the US, one missile would pay for three hospitals! And, we are on the same path right now. Grrrrrr. I am angry at how blind I've been.

Canadian governments must have been aware of the power that has evolved to the 21 military companies in the US and they haven't informed us! They are in a juggling act trying to get their share of the pie. It is abominable. And where is the media on covering the real story about a North American Union NAU? I challenge the CBC to dig deeply into this .. tell us what you don't know as well as what you can find out.

This doc needs to be studied in depth and then a plan devised to keep ourselves free from anti-democratic, murderous corporations while ensuring that our institutions are totally responsive to the good of our citizens - and not to the use of military products and the will of these corporations. The days of cooked-up war must stop.

Please, show this documentary as many times as you can.

This document was great! It confirmed what many knew all along. Why is it and the others like it not shown during PRIME TIME? More people need to see the controversial matterials, plus most of us have to get up early the next morning.

I think the most disturbing thing i heard in this doc was that the reason there was no "exit Strategy" re the Iraqi invasion was because there are NO plans to "exit". That there are presently 14 permanent installations being constructed.....indicating the Yanks are planning to be there for a very long time.

The current president of the USA will without a doubt be considered the worse president in American history. Young men and women die, thousands of Iraqi civilians die...while this president smirks!!

His lack of intelligience is very apparent.... when he was informed that Iraq is populated by Sunnis and Shias, he replied that he was surprised because he thought they were all Moslem in Iraq.

Absolutely brilliant documentary.

The answer to the question "why we are fight"----for freedom, was the same answer given to me by my American cousin, a navy doctor serving in Fallugia, Iraq. My rebuttal was, "I did not know the freedom of American people was under threat".

The art of persuasion, endoctrination, and repetition has been a powerful tool in the rationale for the war.
Some of the high ranking officers and gov't staff interviewed in "Why we Fight" gave immense credibility to the program and left me with some hope that there are Americans who not only see through the deception but have the courage to unveil it. Thank-you for coming forward.

Please let me know how I can obtain a copy of this film.

Congratulations to CBC for your outstanding, intelligent and thought provoking programming. With a hundred stations to select from, CBC is home on my remote.

I am so proud to be Canadian when I watch the CBC show this point of view. People are dying needlessly for fossilized remains...think about it!!!! It is sad to see that this neo con movement has stolen from it's citizens one of it's most precious abilities....the ability to choose!!!! It is a slippery slope that we as Canadians are on. I remember a time when the oil in the Athabasca Tar Sands was dismissed as being too inacsessible and too expensive. Yet 20 years later here we are tearing up our land because they are looking for new sources of oil. If we contiue to make deals with the devil we are going to get burnt!!

"This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

-Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961-

Unbelievable predicted warning by this former U.S. president. They should tatoo these words onto Bush's and all his brass' forehead.
