Every day, we're presented with the opportunity to be kind. From a quick smile and "thank you" to the bus driver, to helping a person in need... we're often called upon to be friendly to others. But what's really behind our acts of kindness? And when did a kind act have consequences you didn't expect?

On this week's show:

Sook-Yin Lee hits the streets with her handy-dandy recorder to find out what random acts of kindness you've experienced - or perpetrated.

Last December, after talking to friends about a horrible act of violence, Sudbury musician Don Kunto decided to make something good happen. But his act of kindness took an unusual form: over 200 custom-written Christmas songs for children.

What happens when your act of kindness turns out to be anything but? Actor Joe Cobden will share the story of how his act of good Samaritan-ism ended up leading to the accidental kidnapping of an elderly man in a wheelchair. (Video Courtesy: Joe Cobden)

Here's the short film the encounter inspired:

Travellers are definitely familiar with the kindness of strangers - there is a lot of giving and receiving while you are on the road. We'll chat with travel writer Jeff Greenwald about his experiences with kindness, and hear about one arrowing moment where friendliness meant the difference between life and death.

Most of us expect acts of kindness to be met with gratitude - but what happens when all you get back is... awkwardness? Victoria's Darin Steinkey shares his story of how an act of charity left him confused.

Is there such a thing as being too kind? DNTO producer Jenna Cameron explains why being the "nice guy" could be bad for your health, your career, and your wallet.

It hasn't always been easy for Althea Guiboche to put food on the table for her seven children, but she knew that they had it better than some folks in Winnipeg's downtown core. So she decided to share... and her unique act of kindness ended up landing her in some hot water.

When Cara Yeates was in school, she stopped to help a classmate who was struggling to finish a long-distance race. Or at least that's how her dad, Jim, saw it from the sidelines. Live in the DNTO studio, she'll come clean with her Dad about what really happened.

Can you rely on the kindness of strangers? Performance artist Marisa Crockett used her latest project to find the answer. For five days, with nothing at all, she sat behind the glass window of an art studio - relying entirely on the what strangers provided her.

Being an actor in a big city with lots competition can be an uphill battle - there are so many factors that can influence you getting the job. Actor Anne-Marie Scheffler knows this all too well, but never expected to almost kill her own career with kindness.
