Most of us avoid being by ourselves if we can help it. From dining alone to travelling alone to being left at home by ourselves - it's something we've all faced.

But sometimes, when we're forced to be on our own, we can surprise ourselves.

On this week's show:

The night of May 5th, 2013, started like any other for Erica Bovino, who was pregnant with her second child. She tucked her 3 year old son into bed, and kissed her husband goodbye as he went to work a night shift. Then she climbed into bed herself...

Eric Klinenberg sm.jpg
Back in 1995, there was a horrible heat wave in Chicago that killed 750 people in just five days. Most of those people died alone. When a young sociologist named Eric Klinenberg started writing a book about that tragedy, it launched him on a solo journey into the study of living alone.

Ross 2 sm.jpgActor Charlie Ross has made an industry of going it alone. As the creator of the "One Man Star Wars Trilogy" and "One Man Lord of the Rings", he bravely performs the nerdy trilogies in their entirety, all by himself.

Like it or not, being alone can sometimes be seen as taboo. From eating alone, to going to a movie alone, to celebrating your birthday by yourself, the experience can either be uncomfortable - or amazing. Sook-Yin Lee hits the streets to hear your best solo stories.

Some years ago, Shawn Stratton started planning his first big trip to Asia. He was 23 years old, and had organized to travel with friends...but they all bailed. So what happens when an adventurous young man is left to his own devices in Bankok?

sharon kinzel 2 sm.jpg
Sharon Kinzel loves to be alone. For 30 years she has lived deep in the woods in Alberta, in a cabin where her job is to climb a very tall tower and watch for forest fires. But sometimes when you're most determined to be alone, companionship has a way for finding you.

Kids can get up to some pretty crazy shenanigans w
hen left to their own devices. Without parental supervision, bored and on their own, children can wreak all sorts of havoc. Just ask Lisa Schwartzman, whose story ends with her father heading in to the woods carrying a shovel and a sack...

Like a lot of Canadian kids, Jeremy Baker never got a chance to go to Disneyland. And you'd think that at 25, it'd be too late for a solo trip to the happiest place on earth. Think again.

PennyLoker.jpg
Penny Loker is a young woman from Waterloo, Ontario. And given the choice, she'd rather not be alone in public. Penny was born with a condition that has left her with facial differences, which has meant that the attention she attracts in public isn't always positive. She'll share her inspiring story.

Ken MacDougall sm.jpg
Flying alone can be stressful. But at 14 years old, Ken MacDougall, felt like he had his first solo flight under control. He was en route from his mom's in Halifax, to his Dad's in Windsor, Ontario. His last step was to catch a connecting flight in Toronto. Everything was going great!
Until...
