FEAST YOUR EARS ON THIS!
For our first show of the season, we're all about the FIRST DAY. Y'know, the first day of your job, the first day of your relationship and your first day of school. We'll hear Precious Chong's harrowing account of her first day as the personal assistant to conspiratorial bossy pants filmmaker Oliver Stone; and how it was for a couple of strangers who woke up beside each other on the first day of their arranged marriage! Plus find out how sleep-deprived Canuck TV and movie heartthrob turned epic war movie director, Paul Gross, made it through the first day on the set of his new flick Passchendaele.
Okay now it's my turn. When I think of an unforgettable first day of one of my jobs, there's one that immediately springs to mind. It happened way back when I first moved to Toronto from Vancouver on my first day on job as a MuchMusic VJ on live national TV.
Okay the fact of the matter was, I was totally nervous. It was my first official job, and the thought of having to look into the steel eye of a video camera, and speak to thousands of Canadians, made me want to puke. I tried to convince myself it was like every other McJob I'd ever held, so I dressed up in a polyester waitress uniform and matching cap, and roller skated around the studio carrying a tray of videotapes glued together. I looked like a complete freak, which made me even more of a wreck. So I excused myself to the bathroom where I resorted to my secret weapon: a black leather underwear harness my friend hand-crafted for me to use for adult entertainment activities. I never wore the leather harness for the purpose it was designed for, but, I did notice when I secretly put it on under my clothes it gave me an extra added boost of confidence, like a chastity belt under a kilt. This did the trick. I roller-skated with a newfound kick to my step. The only problem was, after awhile, the leather harness started chafing, and I had to take it off and stash it at the bottom of my knapsack. Towards the end of my first day on nationally televised live television, another VJ, good ol' Master T, sauntered over to welcome me. The cameras were rolling, when he spontaneously took a look into my open knapsack. Master T went pale (as pale as a Caribbean-Canadian can be), and excused himself curtly from the scene. I'm not sure if I sunk or swam that day, but I did learn to zip up my bag.
So that's my story, what's yours? Tell me one thing that went wrong on the first day of your job!
