DNTO June 12: You're my best friend (or at least a friend...)

In elementary school, you had one "best friend." Now, some of us have hundreds (or thousands) of "friends" on Facebook. So what makes a real friend? We're getting friendly with that question this week.

Read on to find out what's on the show, or click the player below to listen. (You can also download the podcast here, or get the enhanced version from iTunes).

To start with, DNTO's guest host (and good friend) Mio Adilman takes to the street to ask: when did you realize your friend was a great friend?

Your wedding is - theoretically - a time to celebrate with friends and family. But when you're on a tight budget, you may have to make some tough choices about who your "friends" are.
Johan Hultqvist will tell us how putting together his invite list helped him find out who his real friends were... and why there were some surprises in the process.

A while back, against all common sense, Mio visited a website called failin.gs. The site lets your friends log in to tell you exactly what your shortcomings are. Mio will recreate the experiment, and give his pals a chance to tell the whole country what his failings are.

It's probably not a huge surprise to find out that your friends have an influence on the way you feel... and behave. But did you know that your friends' friends' friends might also affect everything from how happy you are to how much you weigh? We'll find out why from social scientist James Fowler, co-author of Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks.

It's an age-old question: can you be friends with your ex? Dawn Dumont thought she could... and then thought she couldn't... and then decided she could. How'd it all work out? Dawn will fill us in.

Now we couldn't do a show about friends without talking about their evil twin: the "frenemy." The people you think are your friends, even as they stab you in the back, bring you down, suck your energy, and make you wonder: with friends like this, who needs enemies? Megan Tate will tell us about her frenemy... and why she's still trying to recover from the experience.

So when your friend becomes your "frenemy" - or at the very least, a nusiance - how do you break up? We'll ask Lucinda Rosenfeld, author of I'm So Happy for You: A Novel About Best Friends.

Comedian Samantha Bee's new memoir,  I Know I Am, But What Are You? is full of stories of the trouble she got into with her friends when she was younger. She'll share one of those stories with us, and take on the "DNTO Rapid Fire Friend Questionnaire."

Trying to rekindle a lapsed friendship is a noble ambition. As long as both parties share the same definition of "friendship" and what it entails... Mike Mitchell will tell us what happens when they don't.

You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family. So can you be friends with your kin? We'll ask Sally Horchow, co-author of The Art of Friendship: 70 Simple Rules For Making Meaningful Connections - a book about making friends she wrote with her own dad.

A few years ago, a bunch of friends got together to play some music at Toronto's Dakota Tavern.  And before long, those five friends were a bonafide band, rocking out to a packed bar every weekend. The Beauties have just released their first album. But you could say that the band really got its start about twenty years ago, when Shawn Creamer and Jud Ruhl met each other in high school and became best friends. We'll ask them about being BFFs and bandmates, and hear a live-in-studio tune from them.

One day you're giving a stranger directions... the next, you're the only person at her 80th birthday party, and she's one of your most fascinating friends. Erica Sigurdson will tell us about the most unlikely friendship she ever made.

British anthropologist Robin Dunbar has a theory that humans can only handle about 150 friendships at a time. Other sociologists say we can only maintain a handful of close friends. So what does that mean for a Facebook user like Joanne Thomas Yaccato, who has over 2,500 "friends?" We'll ask her about "real" vs. "virtual" friends (and if that's an actual distinction any more)... and how she really connects with over 2,500 pals.
