Oct. 31/08: Meet Marcy Markusa!

Alright. I loathe to admit this…but this is my first blog. I’m not a major loser or anything, I’m just sort of slow. I actually do a lot of technical work in my job…I can operate a board and set up a radio remote but I just sort of learn things when they come up…I am not a techno self starter.

But now I have to get on board because DNTO has asked me to guest host the show while Sook Yin Lee is away. And that girl is seriously cool and plugged in. Or at least that’s how I see her.

So since we’re going to get to know eachother—let’s just get the uncool confession right out there on the table now...

I’ve still never been on Facebook, I’ve never downloaded a song, and once, accidentally I put a picture of my dog on the computer. I can’t do it again though because I don’t remember which buttons I pressed. The other day I was at my friend’s house and her brother called on Skype and I seriously couldn’t stop leaning into the little computer camera and saying “oh my god, it’s like the Jetsons!” And work recently gave me a blackberry and I’m obsessed with changing the colour of the rolling “mouse” ball…don’t even ask me to try texting.

Now I come by all of this honestly. I’m a child of the 80’s.

I can sing every word to Bust a Move, I remember when fruit roll ups were innovative and I used to pin my jeans from my ankle to my knee making my Ukrainian thighs look even bigger than the ones my mother gave me. What I’m trying to say is…the 80’s weren’t that cool.

But here’s what the 80’s gave me. The stuff that I like…

I’m sarcastic, I can handle bad hair and I can appreciate a good geek like Anthony Michael Hall. I cry at Air Supply ballads without shame and I know what too much eyeliner means. And I’m not letting go of Ralph Macchio or Rocky so don’t even ask me to.

For the next few weeks on DNTO you’ll also hear that I love the personality of politics, I’m fascinated with generational differences and I have a deep appreciation for every point of view. I hail from a loud Winnipeg family that can be politically incorrect but always well-meaning and I’m married to the most stylish and stubborn French-Irishman living in Canada today. I come from the land of morning radio where I co-host Manitoba’s local wake-up show. So during my first week on DNTO I’ve had more sleep than I’ve had in months.

My first job was selling nacho cheese samples from a tray in a local Safeway store. I had to wear a sombrero. An old lady told me off because the cheese was too spicy. Another lady emerged and felt sorry for my public flogging. She bought up all of the samples under the guise that she just had to have them for the cottage. I ended up winning an award for top sales that month. The company sent me a microwave.

My life is a sitcom.

Now what that second old lady did for me was an incredible act of charity.

And that’s what we want to hear from you for next weeks’ show.

When was the last time someone was charitable to you?

Or maybe you’re the giver…

Did you ever give something away and it backfired?

The unexpected sides of charity.

That’s next week on DNTO.

Don’t miss it…my husband is going to tell us why he wants to cut off our World Vision man just because he turned twenty this year.

And enjoy this week's leadership show.

I’ll do my best to fill in as your leader on DNTO.

OK. There it is.

The end of my first blog ever. Do I sign off?

I guess so. Is that cool? Write to me if it’s not.

Marcy.
