Strange sea creature fossils discovered in the Burgess Shale
This illustration is a reconstruction of Siphusauctum gregarium. The animals are shown in life position, standing upright in the water column partially anchored into the sediment by a small holdfast. (Copyright Marianne Collins/ROM/U of T/PLoS One)
The bizarre tulip-shaped creature used to live on the ocean floor, now the Burgess Shale.
The finding was published yesterday evening in the online journal PLoS ONE.
The study's lead author is Lorna O'Brien. She is a PhD candidate in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Toronto.
Daybreak host Chris Walker reached her at her office.

Teachers' strike wastes resources says administrator
There's no quick fix to the teachers labour dispute with the province.
The B.C. Teachers' Federation wants a 15 per cent increase over three years. The province is offering zero.
Lots of people are caught in the middle, including administrators like Larry Paul. He is the Secretary Treasurer for the Central Okanagan School District. Since September he's had to pick up non-teaching duties vacated by teachers.
