Outstanding Young Person: Michael Noonan

This week, we are spotlighting outstanding young people.
Each day, we'll be featuring a different young Montrealer who is one to watch.
Michael Noonan is a honours Ecology student at Concordia University.
He is one of only two Quebecers selected to be a Rhodes scholar.
The prestigious scholarship provides all expenses to study at the University of Oxford in England.

Green Website

Two Montrealers are behind a new website which is encouraging individuals to reduce carbon emissions. It's based on the cap and trade model - which was recently adopted in Quebec making it the first Canadian province to do so. Manuel Werner is the co-founder of the website Catagori. Genevieve Weynerowski is his partner.

Caleche drivers facing hard haul

Montreal's caleche drivers say they're facing a bumpy ride these days as they try to make a living. The city has cut the number of caleche (horse and buggy) permits in half and stable owners are worried rising property values could put them out of business.

Hanukkah hot meals

Le Cafe in Snowdon offers free, hot kosher meals three nights a week. They say the need appears to be growing. Thanks to a sizable donation, le Cafe will now be able to serve even more people. We spoke to Moshe Ben-Shach, from the Federation CJA, and Rabbi Michael Whitman, who will lead a special Hanukkah service there on Dec 22.

Allez Up announces move to old Redpath Silos!

 A well known climbing gym in Pte. St. Charles is responding to the demand for more space and will be more than doubling their square footage with a move right down the street to the old Redpath Silos. The new gym will be the tallest indoor gym in Canada and is receiving a 200,000$ infusion from Tourism Quebec to help with the redesign.

The gym is owned and operated by the Richer-de la Plante family and this announcement is truly the starting point of a labor of love for the whole family.

Construction is underway and the grand opening is slated for summer 2012.

The uncertain future of Angell woods in Beaconsfield

We taking you out to Angell Woods on the West Island. It's 80 hectares of land in between autoroute 20 and 40 in Beaconsfield, and it's a beloved spot for nature walks. Now, new "no trespassing" signs have gone up around Angell Woods, put there by the private owners of the land. We talked to a representative of those owners, the mayor of Beaconsfield and a local conservationist.

The borough says there is still time to affect the future of the area. But with some much construction already going on there are questions about whether that future has already be foretold. Pierrefonds-Roxboro residents question zoning move

The he future of some waterfront property in Pierrefonds-Roxboro currently owned by orders of the Catholic Church is up in the air. Yhose orders based on Gouin Boulevard are not looking to sell but the borough says it wants to be ready to turn them residential just in case. We spoke to a resident opposed to the move and the borough mayor, Monique Worth.
