Bond, Booze and Brands

BOND.jpg007 will be substituting his signature martini for a lowly beer in the upcoming film Skyfall, thanks to a product placement deal with Heineken.

James Bond has long been associated with brands - but is a beer endorsement taking it too far?

Brent chats with David Leigh, author of The Complete Guide to the Drinks of James Bond and proprietor of The James Bond Dossier website.

Coming up: The Sound of Taste

taste pear web.jpgIf any of you are stressing out over how well Easter Dinner will (or won't) go, perhaps tuning into Day 6 will help calm your nerves.

This weekend, you can hear our conversation with Barb Stuckey, author of Taste What You're Missing: The Passionate Eater's Guide To Why Good Food Tastes Good.

The book hopes to teach you why you might love certain foods and hate others, and reveals some surprising research into why tasting food is about more than just what your tongue tells you.

Sound for instance.  Join us this weekend to find out why nothing pairs better with a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon than a good Guns N Roses song, why some restaurants serve seafood with a side of iPod, and why Pringles chips might not taste as fresh as a bag from another brand.

Oh, and Barb just might tip you off on the secret to cooking the best Easter ham ever.

And finally, we'll have copies of the book to giveaway to a few lucky listeners.  Details to come.

Here's Barb Stuckey explaining how we experience taste:

Spike's Twitter Disaster

spikelee.jpgThis week, an address showed up on Twitter purportedly belonging to George Zimmerman, the shooter in the controversial Florida case of the killing of Trayvon Martin. It was retweeted by thousands, including Spike Lee - who has more than 250,000 followers. But it was the wrong address - the home of a couple in their seventies, Elaine and David McClain. Brent spoke with Elaine's son, Chip Humble, about his family's experience.

Twitter and The Law

twitterlaw.jpgSpike Lee apologized to a Florida couple on Wednesday for re-tweeting their address as the home of George Zimmerman, the shooter in Florida's Trayvon Martin case. Within minutes of Lee's apology, comedian Roseanne Barr posted the correct address of George Zimmerman's family. She quickly apologized and deleted the Tweet. Also this week, Justin Bieber's Twitter prank went bad, a student in the UK got jail time for racist Tweets, and a New Zealand cricketer won the first-ever Twitter libel judgement. Brent spoke to David Fraser about Twitter and the law. David is on the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Law and Technology, and he teaches Internet and Media Law at Dalhousie Law School.

Trayvon Martin and Florida's Stand Your Ground Law

Thumbnail image for standyourground.jpgAt the heart of the Trayvon Martin controversy is what's known as the "Stand Your Ground" law. Introduced in Florida in 2005, the law eliminates a citizen's duty to retreat before using deadly force if attacked outside the home, and grants immunity from prosecution or civil lawsuits in self-defense cases.  Similar laws have been adopted by over a dozen states since it was introduced in Florida.  Brent spoke to Miami Herald crime reporter David Ovalle about the law.

On Fire for Tibet

tibet coffins.jpgEarly in the morning of November 4th, Migmer Tsering walked up to the Chinese embassy in New Delhi and set himself on fire. His legs were badly burned, but Migmer survived.

There's been a rash of Tibetan self-immolations in the past year, at least three in the last week alone.

All of these Tibetans are protesting China's rule over their homeland.

Brent spoke with Migmer Tsering, also known as Sherab Tsedor, about that morning in November.  Some of the conversation may not be suitable for young or sensitive listerners.
