Steubenville, CNN and the ethics of reporting on rape

Listen

All eyes were on Steubenville, Ohio this week as Ma'lik Richmond and Trent Mays were convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl. The outrage that many people felt over the details of the Steubenville crime was intensified by CNN reporter Poppy Harlow's coverage of the verdict, with her focus on the future of the rapists and scant mention of the rape victim. At the same time, a darkly satirical fake news report produced by the Onion two years ago resurfaced. It seemed to predict this week's events. An online petition demanding an apology has already amassed over a quarter of a million signatures but media ethics expert Kelly McBride of the Poynter Institute says "railing against CNN for the Steubenville coverage is a waste of time". She tells Brent why.
