Tensions boiled over between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza this week. And once again, it played out violently. While Canada has listed Hamas as a terrorist organization - the creation of a Palestinian state alongside a safe and secure Israel is something this country supports. A Palestinian state is among Hamas' goals. And despite the sometimes violent differences of opinion between the factions of Palestinian leadership in Gaza and the West Bank - an independent state is one thing they can all agree on.
But how to get there? By launching rockets? Negotiations? A United
Nations bid? What about non-violence? Could a Palestinian Gandhi deliver
statehood? Professor
Wendy Pearlman has explored whether or not a
non-violent movement could work for Palestinians. She's a poli sci prof
at Northwestern University and the author of Violence, Nonviolence, and
the Palestinian National Movement. She's was in Chicago.
