The northern Mali city in Timbuktu has recently been taken over by an Al-Qaeda affiliated group called the Ansar Dine. Determined to do away with the remnants of the city's past, the group is trying to destroy some of the world's oldest Islamic monuments:tombs and centuries old mosques. Shamil Jeppie is the director of the Tombouctou Manuscripts Project, based out of the University of Cape Town. He's working to try and preserve Timbuktu's cultural heritage. Day 6 producer Dominic Girard filled in for Brent last week and he did the interview.
