What's going on? Why has giving birth become so terrifying?
Recent studies out of the UK and Australia indicate that a third of women described labour as a "traumatic" experience -- and that 6% of new mothers develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
This week, a story in the Guardian showed a rise in reports of birth trauma. And a surge in the number of women opting for Cesearean deliveries because they suffered trauma during previous births. That's up 40% from three years ago in some hospitals.
Professor Susan Wray is the lead reseacher at the Better Births Centre at the University of Liverpool, where they are studying the increase in birth-related trauma.
