CFIA issues warning of possible contaminated spinach

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning the public not to eat an American brand of fresh spinach that may contain salmonella bacteria.
The Queen Victoria brand of fresh spinach was sold in 10 ounce (or 284 gram) packages, bearing UPC 0 33383 65201 6 and the best before date of "DEC 07."
The agency said in a release Sunday that the product was distributed in the Atlantic provinces.
"Although the likelihood of any remaining affected product being sold at the retail level is remote, some consumers may still have this product in their refrigerators," the agency said in a statement.
"For this reason, consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and not to consume the affected product."
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product. The agency advises that salmonella bacteria can be present in food that does not look or smell spoiled.
The spinach industry in the U.S. is still trying to recover after three people died and 204 people, including one Ottawa woman, were sickened by contaminated spinach from California.
