Dorel playpen/bassinets recalled over suffocation risk

More than 213,000 Dorel bassinet-playpens have been recalled in Canada and the U.S. because of a suffocation risk, although no infant deaths have been reported.

The playpen brands are Safety 1st and Eddie Bauer, manufactured in China by Dorel Juvenile Group Inc., of Columbus, Ind.

The risk involves the one-piece metal bars supporting the playpen floorboard, which can come out of the fabric sleeves and create an uneven sleeping surface, posing a risk of suffocation or positional asphyxiation, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada.

This creates a suffocation hazard.

The playpen combos were sold by Babies "R" Us, Kmart, Sears, Target and Walmart between January 2007 and October 2009.
