MTD Products recalls log-splitters because amputation risk
Thursday, December 17, 2009 | 12:23 PM ET
MTD Products Inc. has recalled its "Yard Machines" and "Troy-Bilt" log-splitters because of an amputation risk.
The control handle on the control valve of the log splitter may not automatically return to the neutral position and stop the splitting wedge when the operator's hand is released from the forward position. The splitting wedge could continue to creep or move forward, posing a laceration risk to the hands or fingers of the operator.
Neither Health Canada, MTD Products Inc. nor the U.S. CPSC has received reports of incidents or injuries related to the use of these log splitters.
About 2,100 units were sold in Canada and 26,000 in the U.S.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled log splitters and contact MTD Products Inc. to receive instructions on inspecting their machine. If the consumer has a faulty control valve, they are advised to schedule an appointment to have a free replacement valve installed.
