Possible Salmonella taint in Queen Victoria spinach

Queen Victoria brand fresh spinach sold in four provinces may be contaminated with salmonella and should not be eaten, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns.

The affected spinach was sold in Ontario from Sept. 8 to 17 inclusive and in British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan from Sept. 5 to 17 inclusive.

The CFIA said no illnesses have been reported. The importers are voluntarily recalling the affected product.

The spinach was sold in bunches held together with a twist tie bearing the Queen Victoria logo and inscriptions that read Product of USA, PLU 4090 and UPC 33383-65200.

Salmonella contamination can lead to serious and possibly fatal infections in the young, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

Salmonella contamination can cause high fever, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea in otherwise healthy people, according to the CFIA.
