Stair gates recalled due to risk of broken hinge

The CPSC has recalled 131,500 Safety 1st SmartLight Stair Gates because the hinges can break, posing a fall hazard to children if the gate is placed at the top of the stairs.

The affected units have a model number of 42111, which is printed on a sticker under the handle panel. The gates, which were manufactured before December 20, 2008, are white metal with a gray handle and a motion sensor nightlight that illuminates on approach.

They were sold at various retailers from January 2005 through July 2009 for about $60.

They were imported by Dorel Juvenile Group USA, of Columbus, Ind.

Consumers should stop using the recalled gate and contact the company to obtain a free repair kit.
