Health Canada is recalling certain Frigidaire and Kenmore Elite electric stoves because of defects in the heating elements.
The elements can suddenly turn on without someone switching them on, they can stay on even after they've been turned off, and they heat to a different temperature than selected, Health Canada said Friday.
The stoves are all freestanding models with rotary knobs, a digital screen, and a smooth-top surface. Affected Kenmore Elite model numbers range from C970-68802 to C970-69809. Frigidaire models subject to the recall range from CGLEFM97DB to PGLEF388ES. More complete information is available in the recall notice on Health Canada's website.
About 54,000 of the faulty stoves were sold across Canada. They were manufactured by the Frigidaire division of Electrolux Canada.
Owners of the affected stoves should stop using them immediately and contact Frigidaire toll-free at 1-877-609-7857 — or Sears, if they bought their unit there — to schedule a free repair.
Health Canada said it has not received any reports of injuries from using the stoves.
