Health Canada recalls Uni-Bright brand barbecue lighters over potential fuel leak

Health Canada is recalling Uni-Bright brand barbecue lighters because they can leak fuel, posing a burn hazard.

This recall involves Uni-Bright barbecue lighters with straight or flexible shafts. The lot number can be found on a sticker attached to the handle of the product.

The Uni-Bright barbecue lighter with the straight shaft can be identified by UPC code number 628750818029 and lot #18/03/08.

The Uni-Bright barbecue lighter with the flexible shaft can be identified by UPC 628750818036 and lot #18/03/08 or #6/06/06.

Testing by Health Canada has revealed that the lighters have "unsafe burning characteristics" and can leak fuel, posing a burn hazard for users. The refuelling instructions that come with the lighters are also insufficient for safe use.

In addition, the child-resistant mechanism may not work properly on the Uni-Bright lighters with the straight shaft.

Health Canada has not received any reports of incidents or injuries.

About 92,000 of the straight-shaft lighters and 9,000 of the flexible-shaft lighters were distributed in Canada from April 2008 to June 2009

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled lighters and safely dispose of it.

Consumers may contact their municipality for instructions on how to dispose of the recalled product.
