Almost 1 million Kolcraft playpen-cribs recalled for hazard

Chicago-based Kolcraft Enterprises is recalling almost one million portable playpen-cribs over concerns the product poses a fall hazard to children, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.
The company said the recall includes the Kolcraft Travelin' Tot brand and other similar products sold under the brand names of Carter's, Sesame Street, Jeep, Contours, Care Bear and Eric Carle Play Yards.
About 14,000 of the "play yards" were sold in Canada at Wal-Mart and Toys 'R' stores, Kolcraft said.
The company said it received 347 reports of sides of the device collapsing unexpectedly, resulting in 21 injuries to young children, including one in Canada.
The recall applies to the following products:
- Kolcraft Travelin' Tot.
- Kolcraft Travelin' Tot LTD.
- Kolcraft Travelin' Tot 2-in-1.
- Kolcraft Travelin' Tot 3-in-1.
- Kolcraft Travelin' Tot 4-in-1.
- Carter's Lennon Travelin' Tot.
- EMU Carter's Travelin' Tot.
- Carter's Travelin' Tot.
- Sesame Beginnings 2-in-1 Play Yard by Kolcraft.
- Sesame Travelin' Tot VT.
- Jeep Sahara, Jeep Sahara SE, Limited SE, XT, and Limited XT Play Yard.
- Contours 2-in-1 Travel Play Yard.
- Contours 3-in-1 Play Yard.
- Contours Deluxe Play Yard.
- Contours Travel Play Yard.
- Care Bear Play Yard.
- Eric Carle Play Yard with Activity Gym.
The recall order said a side rail may fail to latch properly, and could collapse if a child pushes on it.
None of the injuries was serious.
Some of the models involved in this recall were subject to a previous recall in September 2007 due to a strangulation hazard posed by the changing table that resulted in the death of a 10-month-old child in the U.S.
Consumers should immediately stop using the products and contact Kolcraft for a free repair kit, the recall order said.
Those looking for additional information can contact Kolcraft toll-free at 1-866-594-4208.
