Wintech teethers recalled over bacteria and mould contamination

Health Canada has recalled some packages of Wintech water teethers because they are contaminated with mould and bacteria.

The packages contain two teethers — one is shaped like a yellow hand, the other like a purple foot.

The water filling of the teethers is contaminated with the bacterium Staphylococcus warneri, which isn't known to cause illness, Health Canada said.

But it may cause illness for those with weakened immune systems if the teether is punctured and the user consumes some of the liquid inside.

Approximately 787 of the packages were sold across Canada from February to June 2009. Parents are advised to stop letting infants use the products and to return the teethers to the point of purchase.
