The CFIA warns consumers about apricot seeds
Monday, June 15, 2009 | 02:23 PM ET
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says Canadians should avoid apricot kernels sold under the Our Father's Farm brand.
Excessive consumption of the kernels could cause acute cyanide poisoning, as the "ultra bitter" apricot kernels contain a natural toxin called amygdalin, the CFIA said.
The agency said the affected product has the UPC 18122 91760 0 and was sold in 227 gram packages in Ontario and perhaps across Canada.
The CFIA said it has received one report of an illness associated with the consumption of this product.
Symptoms of cyanide poisoning include headaches, dizziness, mental confusion, nausea and vomiting.
