The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Applica Consumer Products Inc. have recalled around 584,000 coffee makers because they pose a burn hazard.
The recall affects Black & Decker Spacemaker Coffeemakers, sold across the United States at major retailers like Wal-Mart, Bed, Bath and Beyond and Amazon.com between March 2006 and March 2009.
The brew basket can shift out of position causing water to overflow, which in turn can scald or burn the user.
Black & Decker has received 235 reports of water boiling over, including 10 reports of users sustaining second-degree burns.
The following model numbers are affected:
- ODC440
- ODC440B
- ODC450
- ODC460
Consumers are advised to stop using the coffeemaker and contact the distributor, Applica Consumer Products Inc., for a free replacement brew basket.
Applica can be reached at 1-866-668-4442. The firm is also advising consumers with further questions to visit its website, www.acprecall.com.
